There was a question about how to make good Koudai (the bottom part of Chawan) when Ken-san and I had a workshop together. I would like to share our idea about making koudai.
“It's about energy. The motion is quick, but it's not just the speed. It contains momentum. This is universal in different forms of art, like calligraphy and painting. You find serendipity if there is good energy in it. If you move deliberately to avoid failure, the serendipity doesn't come out. If you move decisively, everything starts to move. The "quick" movement is from striving for serendipity.”
